Ralph Regula to Receive H. Peter Burg Regional Vision Award

4/7/2009 1

Team Northeast Ohio (Team NEO) will honor former Congressman Ralph Regula with the annual H. Peter Burg Regional Vision Award at the Team NEO Economic Development Impact Awards to be held June 2, 2009.

The H. Peter Burg Regional Vision Award commemorates the late chairman and CEO of FirstEnergy Corporation, a regional leader who was the founding chairman of Team NEO.

“Ralph Regula exemplifies the legacy of Pete Burg,” said Christopher M. Connor, Chairman & CEO, The Sherwin-Williams Company and Chairman of the Board, Team NEO.  “We are proud to recognize the Congressman for his career that has spanned decades, dedicated to his constituents, the Region and the entire State of Ohio.  All have benefited from his leadership and commitment, specifically in the areas of health care, education and alternative energy.  Ralph reached beyond the 16th District to improve lives and create institutions and programs that will benefit every citizen of Northeast Ohio for many years to come. ”

Regula recently retired after 36 years in the House of Representatives for Ohio’s 16th Congressional District.  From 2001 to 2007, he was Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Education.  In this position he was able to bring resources back to Northeast Ohio for health care research, health care productive development, nursing retention, job retraining for displaced manufacturing workers, and federal monies for Northeast Ohio’s public and private universities to act as tools for economic development.

“Indeed, the entire region has benefited from Congressman Regula’s work,” added Dick Pogue, former Managing Partner of Jones Day, and 2008 recipient of the H. Peter Burg Regional Vision Award.  “His spirit of regional collaboration sparked the formation of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and secured essential federal support for the Ohio Erie Canal Towpath and Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.  During his long tenure in Washington, he was a champion of what he regarded as Northeast Ohio’s worldwide leadership in medical care, and his efforts led to expanded biomedical research in the region.  He also fought for other good causes, including increased funding of childhood development programs and energy research.”

In addition to honoring Congressman Regula at the Economic Development Impact Awards, Team NEO will also be honoring finalists from throughout Northeast Ohio in 10 economic development categories, including Business Attraction, Business Expansion, Business Retention, Public-Private Partnership and Asset Creation.  One winner in each category will be announced at the awards dinner.

The Economic Development Impact Awards will be held June 2 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Independence, OH.  Tables of 10 and individual tickets are available for sale. Please log on to IBMag.com/Team NEO to register.

Team NEO advances Northeast Ohio’s economy by attracting businesses worldwide to the 16-county Cleveland Plus region.  The organization is a joint venture of the region's largest metro chambers of commerce.  Since 2007, the organization has attracted more than 20 new companies, 2,200 new jobs and more than $70M in annual payroll to Northeast Ohio, leading to a total regional annual impact of $150M.
